Bio

Zach grew up in Watertown, SD and graduated summa cum laude from St. Cloud State University with a B.S. in Finance. After graduation, Zach worked for a Minneapolis investment company analyzing derivative securities for large institutional clients. After a short time, though, he felt compelled to return to his beloved home state to work in the business banking department at Great Western Bank (NKA First Interstate Bank). In that role, Zach spent five years performing credit analysis and managing customer relationships. While he specialized in agricultural lending, Zach also worked with customers operating in a variety of other industries.

Zach’s career as a banker advising his customers and bank leaders about business opportunities and issues led to his decision to attend law school. He attended the University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law to expand his background as a trusted business advisor and problem-solver. While attending law school, Zach won the Sam Masten Moot Court Competition and further developed his written and oral argument skills by competing nationally as a member of the Moot Court Board. Zach was also selected to the Order of Barristers, an honorary organization that provides national recognition for law students who have demonstrated excellent advocacy skills at their respective schools.

After obtaining his law degree, Zach had the privilege of clerking for the Honorable Justice Mark E. Salter of the South Dakota Supreme Court. As Justice Salter’s law clerk, Zach analyzed litigants’ arguments, researched an array of legal issues, and assisted Justice Salter with drafting opinions. In Zach’s view, his clerkship instilled important insights regarding how to make effective arguments in the court system and provided profoundly valuable mentorship. Following the conclusion of his clerkship, Zach enthusiastically returned to the Boyce Law Firm, where he had previously interned.

Outside of his practice, Zach and his wife, Chelsea, enjoy taking advantage of South Dakota’s great outdoor recreation opportunities, including boating, hunting, and snow skiing.
